Science Club

Transition Year facilitates the personal growth and social development of students, through active participation in a programme where the approach and process is as important as the content.

Community Care in TY helps our students to foster healthy growth and adjustment, to gain an increased self-knowledge and awareness, to develop effective interpersonal communication and relationships, to develop an understanding and tolerance of others and to understand how feelings and attitudes affect our own behaviour and that of others.

As part of the TY Community Care programme at HCK, a group of students go to St. Columbanus National School, Loughlinstown, each week to assist with a Science Club.

This module not only strengthens our connections with the local community, it is beneficial to both the TY students and the primary school pupils for many reasons.

TY students gain a greater understanding of the importance of volunteering in the community, they gain experience as tutors and they discover hidden talents that may change their view on their own self-worth.

The primary school pupils gain access to science resources that their school does not have, they benefit from team-teaching and experimental learning and they improve their literacy and numeracy skills.
