Environmental Committee and Green Schools

The HCK Environmental Committee embodies our school motto ‘Actions Not Words’.

Environmental issues are of great concern for us all. Making a real difference is very empowering. By being actively involved in our Environmental initiatives, all students become aware that they are part of the solution.

The HCK Environmental Committee fosters a strong sense of citizenship and leadership. It also promotes a strong sense of teamwork and enables students to become part of the decision-making process in school.

To date, HCK have been awarded five Green School Flags by An Táisce for our work on;

  • Litter and Waste
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Travel
  • Biodiversity

We have, and continue to make a difference;

  • we are a single plastic free school
  • water bottle refilling stations
  • well labelled recycle bins in all areas
  • boxes for used batteries in every classroom
  • wild meadow garden
  • beach cleans
  • “ Car Pooling” campaign
  • “Stop Idling” campaign
  • Letters to Government
  • Junk Kouture Sustainable Fashion Competition
  • clothes collections with ClothesPOD
  • member of Recreate
  • Planting 1kg of wild flower seeds on our school campus not only for the planet but to show our solidarity with Ukraine
  • leaf cages for composting (Sept.’22)
  • wormery (Sept.’22)

Our Environmental Committee is made up of elected student nominees from every class, but everyone is welcome! The Committee meets weekly to discuss current Environmental issues and to plan our next initiatives.

We are currently working on our “Global Citizenship: Litter & Waste” Green Schools’ flag (2021-23)

HCK are delighted to be one of the Schools accepted to take part in this new Pilot Project, “Composting for Schools”. We have completed the initial stages and in conjunction with Composting Ireland have devised our Action Plan. These initiatives will be implemented in September 2022.
