Actions Not Words

Log on, Learn

The Transition Year Log on, Learn programme consists of free IT classes offered to (over 65) members of the local community, held in the Holy Child Killiney computer lab. for two hours on Friday afternoons. Community members who would like to improve both their technology skills and confidence with using electronic devices are welcome to sign up to come along and take part in the module of classes.

The TY students are paired up with a senior student at the start of the rotation and they work together weekly sharing technology tips and tricks with using devices such as computers, laptops, smartphones or tablets.

Some of the activities covered so far have been:

  • online shopping,
  • making Christmas cards,
  • creating word documents,
  • budgeting spreadsheets,
  • making Whatsapp groups,
  • skyping family,
  • streaming TV shows online and much more.

The senior student is welcome to bring along their own device or use the computers in the school lab. There is a Log on, Learn syllabus; however, this is tailored to meet the needs of each individual senior participant, depending on what they would like to learn.

Great friendships are formed between the TY student and the senior participants during the set of classes, as weekly chats are had over tea, coffee and biscuits. Following completion of the classes, a small graduation ceremony takes place on the final week, with certificates being awarded to both the senior participant and the TY student teacher.
