Feastday of St Brigid.

Pause for Peace in HCK, Feastday of St Brigid.

This Sunday, 1st February, is the Feastday of St Brigid.

Saint Brigid, Naomh Bríd, Muire na nGael, is one of Ireland’s earliest saints and has always been venerated as our co-patron/ess of Ireland with St. Patrick and St. Colmcille. Her feastday is celebrated on the first day of February.

Brigid, Carer of the Earth, is known as a woman of compassion, contemplation, gentleness, inspiration, strength and peace. St. Brigid of Kildare and the abbesses who succeeded her were renowned as peacemakers in early Ireland.

She is known for her generous spirit, her hospitality and welcome for all. She stood up for what she believed in and displayed the courage to speak out when necessary. She formed the first Christian Community of women in Ireland dedicated to prayer, to the service of all those in any kind of need and to preaching the gospel.

Brigid was a renowned peacemaker and showed extraordinary leadership in early Irish church and society. Brigid was a courageous protector of the natural world and a formidable force for justice.

To honour her heroic work a global call for a 'Pause for Peace' was introduced as apart of the celebration of St Brigid’s Day.

Today in Holy Child Killiney students undertook a ‘Pause for Peace’ minute of silence in their Form Teacher session.

This simple collective action of stopping whatever we are doing, and sending out love from our hearts to those who are suffering from the effects of war, injustice and also for our common home, Mother Earth, sends a formidable message of solidarity.

The Pause for Peace movement is one of those special events which give recognition to the importance of St.Brigid from a cultural, religious, spiritual and historical point of view.

On Sunday, the feast of St Brigid, New Zealand will begin the Pause for Peace movement with a minute’s silence for peace at 12.00 noon, their time on Saint Brigid’s Day. From New Zealand to New York, from Brisbane to Barcelona, a minute’s silence for peace is taking place all around the globe, forming part of the rolling ‘Pause for Peace’ movement.

By taking a moment to ‘Pause for Peace’ today we hope to send out a message that we pray for peace in our own hearts, we wish to have peaceful relationships with each other, and we actively oppose warfare and the use of arms.
Let us be instruments of peace as we unite around the world to send out a blessing of peace.
