Reflecting on the Holy Child Exchange Programme

This spring, three Holy Child Killiney students (Anna, Juliette and Ella) were given the wonderful opportunity to take part in an exchange programme with Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child Jesus in Pasadena, California. Over four weeks, the girls not only experienced life in California but also welcomed their exchange partners, Alden, Juliet and Sophie, to Ireland in return.

In a reflection written by Anna, she described the exchange as “one of the most unique experiences of my life.” What made the experience particularly special was the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in each other’s daily lives, schools and communities, rather than simply visiting as tourists.

During their time in California, the girls attended classes with their host sisters and experienced a very different school system and routine. They had the chance to explore a variety of subjects and after-school activities including photography, dance, track and field. Anna noted how interesting it was to discover that, despite being located thousands of miles apart, both schools shared a similarly welcoming and lively atmosphere.

The exchange also offered countless memorable experiences outside the classroom. Highlights included visiting the Hollywood sign, shopping in Downtown Los Angeles, attending an LA Clippers game, visiting Disneyland and trying many new restaurants and cafés. From board game nights to pastel-themed brunches and trips to world-class cinemas, the girls embraced every part of the experience.

More importantly, the exchange broadened their perspectives by exposing them to different cultures, school systems and ways of life. It gave them the opportunity to step outside of their normal routines, form meaningful friendships and gain a deeper appreciation for the global Holy Child network.

Experiences like this are a powerful reminder that the Holy Child ethos endures across our international Cornelian network… not simply in words, but in the connections, generosity and shared experiences that unite our schools and students around the world.

As Anna reflected, “the relationships we made will last well beyond it.”

We are incredibly proud of Anna, Juliette and Ella for representing Holy Child Killiney so warmly throughout the exchange, and we extend our sincere thanks to Anna for compiling the wonderful accompanying video of memories from such a special experience.
