This year has been a busy start for our basketball teams in HCK, with a total of 10 teams taking part this year in their respective leagues. While our Senior and Cadette teams have started their competitive league campaigns our Junior and Minor (1st years) are getting great practice through competitive friendly matches each week. Our 1st years have done a superb job so far and have tonnes of enthusiasm when it comes to representing HCK and are improving with each match. Here’s some player and Captain updates from our teams.
o The senior A basketball team have had great success in the league so far with 2/2 wins against undefeated teams and hope to continue this streak with their upcoming matches
Maya Khan – Senior A Captain
o The Senior B team have had one match so far in their leagues and unfortunately lost out against a strong Rathdown side. They look ahead to their next set of games against Newpark C.S., Colaiste Raithin and Greystones CC.
o So far this season, the Cadette As have been doing great. We have played five matches and won all five. Although our team is made up of a mix of 2nd, 3rd and 4th years, we’ve all worked really hard and bonded so well, creating a supportive and welcoming team.
We had a tough first league game against Dalkey, who were strong opposition but we managed to come out with the win. I have no doubt that we can go far this basketball season and I’m proud to be a part of the cadette As
Kate MacDevitt – Cadette A Captain
o Basketball this year has been very fun, and we have made lots of progress in recent matches. I can feel our team working better together in each game, and every match we play. We have improved our passing, shooting, and defending. Everyone is putting in effort and encouraging each other. I’m proud of how far we have come as a team, and I am excited to keep improving for the rest of the year.
Juno Murray – Cadette B Player
o I have really enjoyed basketball so far this year. We have had so much fun with all of the coaches. We also have been playing matches against other schools, they have been going quite well, we have a match upcoming on Tuesday. The coaches are also really fun and super nice, this year there are also some new coaches! Overall I am really enjoying basketball and can’t wait to play more matches.
Isabel Gaffney – Junior Pink Team Player
o The start of this basketball season has been great, I’m enjoying our training sessions and the coaches are great at teaching us, we started strong by winning against Loreto on the green 38-8. Afterwards we unfortunately faced a loss against st columbas 16-30. I’ve enjoyed being with my team, training together and playing matches and I cannot wait for the year ahead.
Kacy Zhao – Junior Blue Team Player
o I am so grateful that basketball is in Holy Child because I don't think I had ever touched a basketball in my life before I came here! The school is so encouraging when it comes to sports or even after school activities. Kate, Sinead, Sam and all of the other basketball coaches have taught me so much already and I am only 1 month in the school! I love basketball so much now and I look forward to seeing were it takes me in the future
