School Trips

In Holy Child we offer many trips which complement the syllabus, organised by teachers, who prove expert in their subjects. These trips are of great benefit to the students in their chosen subjects. The educational experiences also allows students to really appreciate and understand their subjects, such as Classical Studies, History and Science, rather than simply reading about them in their textbooks.

One of the main advantages of these trips are the friendships that are forged. Students will leave on their trip with a small group of friends and return with all students being well acquainted through their shared experiences.

Trips on offer are:

2nd Year Trip to Carlingford

The aim of the trip is to encourage the students to get to know other students in their year and expand their friendship groups. The students and their Form teachers also get to know each other better outside of the classroom.

The activities are team building exercises which allow the girls to develop new skills, enjoy a sense of personal achievement and enhance relationships, and at the same time have great fun.

Science Trip to Geneva

“Embedded between nearby Alpine peaks and the hilly terrain of the Jura, the French-speaking city of Geneva lies in the bay where the Rhone leaves Lake Geneva. With its humanitarian tradition and cosmopolitan flair, the European seat of the UNO and headquarters of the Red Cross is known as the “capital of peace”.”

The Science department trip to Geneva is organised to give our STEM students the opportunity to visit CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research. CERN is one of the worlds most respected centres for scientific research that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. The trip involves visits to other educational attractions which prove very popular with the students each year, including: WHO, The Palace of Nations and The Red Cross Museum.

“We walked around the Lake of Geneva astonished by the famous "Jet d'Eau". We visited the Palace of Nations, home of the United Nations Office at Geneva and the Musee Ariana, a ceramic glass museum. We also saw the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, where during an informative and interactive exhibition we learned about the extraordinary humanitarian work done by the inspiring organisation around the world. We toured the picturesque Botanical Gardens and climbed the tower of the St. Pierre Cathedral located in the Old Town for the stunning panoramic views of Geneva and its surroundings.

On our last day we went to the highly anticipated CERN centre. The European Organisation for Nuclear Research is one of the world's largest and most respected centre for scientific research, renowned for containing the Large Hadron Collider.

We were shown the impressive antimatter factory where we saw the equipment used for the ALPHA experiment which makes, captures and studies atoms of antihydrogen to compare them with hydrogen atoms. ALPHA is one of the many experiments carried out by CERN. We also saw a data processing building where we were shown the vast amount of data that the centre organises daily.” Alison Maguire, Past Pupil.

History and Science Trip to Belfast

Every year the History and Science Departments bring all of TY on an overnight cross-curricular trip to Northern Ireland.

It is usually the first overnight trip of the year and is always thoroughly enjoyed by the students. Over the two days, they visit W5 and the Armagh Planetarium to awaken scientific curiosity and learn about Northern Ireland’s fascinating past during a private sightseeing bus tour, World War II workshops and a visit to Titanic.

This tradition of an educational and cultural visit to Northern Ireland has been part of HCK for many years and has come to be seen as a rite of passage into Transition Year.
