Upcoming debating competitions

HCK needs speakers for 4 upcoming competitions, which are open to 3rd years and all seniors! The competitions are open to complete beginners and don’t require preparation, just attendance on the day. Students compete in pairs, which can be self-chosen or selected by our debating coaches Elizabeth O’Sullivan and Amy Cox. All competitions take place over the course of a Saturday, usually from 9/10am-3/4pm, which exact schedules sent closer to the time.

The Hist (University Historical Society) Schools Mace in Trinity College Dublin on Saturday 11th February.

The Phil (University Philosophical Society) Schools Mace in Trinity College Dublin on Saturday 18th Feb.

L&H Senior Mace in UCD on Saturday 25th February.

The Hist Girls' Mace in Trinity College Dublin on Saturday 4th March.

Any interested student should email debating@holychildkilliney.ie or come to debating after school today (Tuesday 7th Feb) in Room 5!

UCD Junior Schools Debating Competition

Two teams from HCK have gotten through to the next round of the UCD Junior Schools Debating Competition 2022/23. Congratulations to HCK C Louise Purcell and Jean McMahon and HCK D Emily Kernan and Juliette Cunningham, who will compete in the Octo Finals on February 23rd.

The competition consisted of two debates spaced out over the first term, for which the girls had a week to prepare. Only the top 32 teams and 32 speakers could progress to the next round.

Hard luck to our other competitors Laura Finucane, Penelope Smith-Tennyson, Cecilia Xiao, Hannah Houlihan, Maya Deegan, Isobel Fitzgerald, Maggie Long and Eve McKenna who unfortunately missed the break this time round. Thank you to Florence Mansfield and Juliette Marry who stepped in to compete in Round 2 as substitutes.

ROCKMUN

Well done again to 2nd years Louise Purcell and Una Kiigan, who both won Best Junior Delegate awards at the Blackrock College Model United Nations last weekend on the 27th-28th January. This is a fantastic achievement for two first-time delegates!

Congratulations also to their fellow delegates Minnie Mansfield, Jessica Berwick, Clara Kearney, Elyse O’Byrne and Zoe Hammond who represented Japan at the conference.

HCK’s MUN club now prepares for upcoming conferences at Wesley College (10th-11th March), St Andrews College (3rd-6th April) and the High School (21st-22nd April). Students from 2nd year upwards can get involved in MUN, and should email debating@holychildkilliney.ie if they are interested.
